Bill has asked me to invite everyone to his daughter's first birthday party. So I will be sending out an email with the location and contact information sometime this evening. The party starts at noon this Saturday and there will be a puppet show at 2pm. It's a Filipino bash so you know that there is going to be a ton of great food! If you haven't received an email by tomorrow or if you think that I don't have your email address and would like to attend, email me at oneworldjiujitsu@gmail.com.
Louis would also like to invite everyone to watch UFC 100 at the Hung's new digs. It starts at 6:30pm, bring food and drinks to share. He has posted his phone number on the white board next to the Jiu-Jitsu mats. You'll need to call him to get the address. I will include his number in the email I will be sending out.

Check with Tomoyo and Louis to see if there is still a Judo and conditioning class this Saturday.
Necessity is the mother of invention, so they say.
Roberto 'Gordo' Correa became the master of the half guard when he injured his knee as a young purple belt and began to develop a position that was most likely only viewed as a transition or a stalemate spot. Gordo is a third degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr., a world champion and the gracious host of a half guard seminar at the newly opened Sandro Batata BJJ inside America's Best Karate in downtown Los Gatos on June 20, 2009. Also in attendance were Antonio Braga Neto, Sandro 'Batata' Santiago, Julio Echeverria, Leonardo Gloglo and Gumby helping out with the techniques.
After the introduction we were all fortunate to see the promotion of one of Batata's students. Arash Dibazar was rewarded for his years of hard work and dedication and promoted to brown belt.
Then we got down to business and school was in session. We discussed the nuances of half guard and basic but very important hand and body position. Some of the escapes and sweeps from the bottom were:
(1)When you have the underhook - moving to the back.
(3)Opponent postures up - lapel control, make space and cross choke.
(a)If opponent buckles down and you still have the hook - sweep
We drilled each technique for 15-20 minutes with help from the black belts. I think my partner and I got assistance on each technique to get the oh-so important details we were missing.
(4) Antonio Braga Neto stepped in and showed us a very detailed and what I felt was an advanced armbar from a sort of butterfly half guard, in other words you are not locking down your opponent and squeezing like your partners leg was the last chopper out of Saigon.
(5) Gordo took over once more and showed us what appeared to be a very simple and effective sweep if your opponent is really putting a lot of pressure on you.
We then went to the top game. We learned (6) a half guard pass by switching base and passing from the opposite side. (7) If your opponent is keeping you from scooting back to make room to pass the opportunity for a top arm - armbar was taught.
Neto took over again to teach us a few details of side control and hitting a good head and arm choke from side control We finished off the training session with (8) a way to deal with a turtled opponent. A handy roll into a collar choke ends all of that turtling nonsense.
3 hours of learning covering 8 techniques from the King of the half guard and the 2008 BJJ World Champion and others. What a fantastic experience this seminar was for me and my One World teammates.
One World was represented by me (Tom), James, Aki, Phil and Mo. Thanks guys.

Thanks Tom. If you want a more detailed explanation of the moves taught at the Gordo Seminar, you'll have to roll with the guys who attended.
See you on the mat.
